Redding - one night to go!!!

Kate and I pulled into Redding, CA around 9pm this evening. We have checked into our final hotel!! Kate is calling it "The Bates Motel" - it is clean, but rather spartan and very campy!

We took off from Bakersfield this morning - it was an awesome morning because we stopped for Starbucks on the way out! woohoo! As a girl that is used to at least daily servings of Starbucks, I was really wanting one after 5 days without seeing one on the road.

We got caught up in a traffic jam for about 45 minutes while on Route 99. It was tedious, but we both decided that it was much better to wait it out than to be in it. Kind of a reminder of how fortunate we have been on our travels.

The bonus for today was getting to visit my cousin Leanna and her husband, Jairo, in Sacramento! We got to see their way cute house and drink some great coffee. Plus, Leanna made us a yummy apple cake, which was delicious! We caught up on family gossip (sadly, nothing too juicy going on...) and made plans to have some West coast family outings. Yes, Andy - you are included on that!

After our visit, we got back on the road to Redding. I stopped to get gas and realized that it may be the last time in a very long time that I will pump my own gas! For those of you that don't know, Oregon is a full service state - you aren't allowed to pump it yourself! So, Kate took a few pics of me pumping my last tank in what I believe will be quite a while!

And tomorrow we hit Portland!!!! I just can't believe that we are almost there. Kate says that she loves everything about driving across country...except the driving. We have had some real luck with weather and roads. California has been a bit of a challenge - the drivers here are very aggressive. I like to consider myself a pretty seasoned DC Beltway driver and even I'm a bit intimidated by the speed and aggression of the California drivers! It feels like everyone is in such a hurry and they aren't really considering anyone else on the road. Kate and I are calling California the "me" state - "Californ-me".

We will check in again tomorrow night - from PORTLAND, OREGON!!!!!!!! woohoo!!!!!!! rock!
